A63 Castle Street Project Update
Published: 16 December 2024
The project has now reached a major milestone with excavation successfully completed, removing over 45,000 m³ of earth. With preparations validated and sound, we are set to move forward with pouring concrete and forming the road and split-level junction.
Despite challenging ground conditions near the Humber that have required innovative solutions including the installation of over 360 tension piles, a jet grout layer for soil stabilisation and water management, we’ve reached a stage where we have greater awareness of the conditions and how to meet them. To make sure we deliver the scheme right, first time round, we’ve unfortunately had to revise our completion timeline to March 2026 that will ensure we can minimise further disruption throughout the remaining work.
On behalf of National Highways, I would like to sincerely apologise for this extended timeline however we deeply appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to deliver this highly complex engineering scheme, which will bring transformative benefits to Hull, the wider region, and the economy. As I’m sure you are already aware, once completed, the project will deliver vital improvements to the strategic road network, enhancing safety, reducing congestion, and improving connectivity between Hull and the surrounding areas. It will support local businesses, attract investment, and provide smoother journeys for road users, significantly contributing to the region's economic growth.
We have already completed some very important milestones for this scheme including a successful traffic switch and the completion of work on Myton Bridge. We’ve created safe, accessible crossings for cyclists and pedestrians with Murdoch’s Connection and the Porter Street footbridge, and a greatly improved pedestrian walkway opened at High Street in April. The new underpass structure is now fully excavated. The next stage for us is to lay the concrete slab to form the base of the underpass.
We are committed to minimising further disruption by maintaining running lanes for traffic throughout the remaining stages of work and will continue to work in collaboration with Hull City Council however, I would like to once again, take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and patience as we advance towards completing this transformative infrastructure for the benefit of Hull and beyond.
